About St. Sava

St. Sava of Serbia

St. Sava is the protector of the poor, the Serb's patron saint of schools and school children, the first Archbishop of the Serbian people,
and the founder of Serbian independent literature.  He is considered the
most important figure in Serbian history, and in fact, the
Nomocanon of Saint Sava or Zakonopravilo was the first Serbian constitution and the highest code in the Serbian Church, finished
        in 1219.

This legal act was the compilation of Civil Law, based on Roman law and Canon law, as well as based on Ecumenical Councils and its basic
purpose was to organize functioning of the young Serbian kingdom
and the Serbian Orthodox church. Today, the Nomocanon is the official
       Canon law of the Serbian,
Russian, and Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

In addition, St. Sava was canonized and venerated by the Serbian Orthodox Church, as its founder, on January 27th for the Gregorian
calendar [Janury 14th for the Julian calendar]. He was the sole person who was responsible for the transformation of the Serbian people
into a people of God, and as a writer and poet, St. Sava also helped bring the expansion of literacy and education across the land. Hence,
on January 27th, the Serbs pay homage to their patron saint with the children presenting poems, songs, and dances dedicated to St. Sava.
The day is celebrated like a traditional slava with kolach, zito, and a candle.

Their allegiance to the way in which he lived was to the Serbs the only true model and expression of a virtuous life. Moreover, his great
works and devotion to the Serbs inspired every generation to take the ideal path of following God's will and accepting one's role of service
and bringing hope, unity, and peace to the entire community like St. Sava had achieved in his time. (Note: Besides this brief biography, the               more extensive biography listed below is a reprint from The Serbian Patericon by Fr. Daniel Rogich.)
